RESUMO

PURPOSE: The number of female urologists, including residents, has gradually increased and has recently exceeded 50. This study aimed to investigate the current status of female urologists in South Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total number of female and male urology specialists and residents, annual new Korean board-certified female and male urologists recent 5 years were obtained from the Korean Urological Association database. Data on working status, region, and subspecialty were collected via a telephone survey. RESULTS: Fifty-four female urologists including 40 urology specialists and 14 urology residents participated in the study. Since the first female doctor received a urology board in 1999, zero to five female doctors have obtained urology board annually. Approximately 50% of female specialists and residents worked in metropolitan areas. The proportion of female urology physicians working in university hospitals was 52.5%. Three had only urology-oncology subspecialties, while the rest had non-oncologic or both subspecialties. CONCLUSIONS: Female urologists are evenly distributed across the country, following the population distribution of Korea. Female urologists are employed in various fields. More female urologists chose non-oncology and double majors as subspecialties than they chose oncology. It is necessary to pay attention to female urologists, who form a minority within the Korean Urological Association, so that they can be continuously produced and actively engaged in various fields.

RESUMO

G-protein-coupled receptor 119 (GPR119) has great potential as a therapeutic target for the treatment of type II diabetes. Novel thieno[3,2-d]pyrimidine derivatives were discovered as GPR119 agonists through a bioisosteric replacement strategy. The sulfonylphenyl thieno[3,2-d] pyrimidine scaffold was introduced, and its derivatives exhibited potent agonistic activity for GPR119 in cell-based assays. The representative derivative 43 displayed excellent pharmacokinetic profiles in rodents and significantly improved glucose tolerance in vivo. In OGTT study, compound 43 reduced significantly blood glucose levels in both mice and rats.

RESUMO

Expansion of a development area can negatively impact ecosystems by decreasing or fragmenting habitats. With increased awareness of the importance of biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES), ecosystem service evaluations have attracted increased attention. The geography surrounding the city of Incheon is ecologically valuable because of its ecological diversity, attributed to its mudflats and coastal terrain. This study analyzed changes caused by the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) agreement in the ecosystem services of this area using uses the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs model and assesses the impacts of BES before and after the implementation of the agreement. Results revealed that carbon fixation and habitat quality decreased by approximately 40% and 37%, respectively, owing to the development caused by the agreement (p < 0.01). Additionally, endangered species and migratory birds were not protected by the terms of the IFEZ, and a decline in habitats, prey, and breeding sites was observed. This study suggests that the value of ecosystem services and the expansion of conservation areas should be considered part of ecological research under economic free trade agreements.

RESUMO

Collisions with wild animals on high-speed expressways not only lead to roadkill but can also cause accidents that incur considerable human and economic costs. Based on roadkill data from 2004-2019 for four common wildlife species involved in collisions with vehicles on expressways in Korea (water deer, common raccoon dog, Korean hare, and wild boar), the present study conducted optimized hotspot analysis and identified spatiotemporal patterns using a space-time cube (STC) approach. Temporal and spatial differences in the roadkill data were observed between species. Water deer were the most common roadkill species of the four studied, with hotspots in the southern region of the capital area, in the Chungnam region, and in the western Chungbuk and Gangwon-do regions. However, the instances of water deer roadkill over time differed between each region. In addition, it was found that the number of cases of wild boar roadkill has increased recently. In particular, a number of new hotspot areas were observed centered on the metropolitan area Gyeonggi-do, which contains a high population and significant infrastructure. Overall, the emerging hotspot analysis based on STCs was able to determine cold spot and hotspot trends over time, allowing for a more intuitive understanding of spatiotemporal clustering patterns and associated changes than cumulative density-oriented hotspot analysis. As a result, it becomes easier to analyze the causes of roadkill and to establish reduction measures according to priority.

RESUMO

Even though environmental impact assessments (EIAs) have been an important tool for environmental decision-making, most EIAs are published as a mix of text and tabular data that is not easily accessible to or understandable for the public. In this paper, we present a decision support system (DSS) that supports the decision-making of stakeholders in the EIA stage. The system was designed to improve the public's understanding of stakeholders before and after a construction project by providing visualization of key environmental elements. We recruited 107 participants to test the usability of the system and examined the impacts of individual differences between the participants on their perceptions of the system, including their environmental expertise and computer self-efficacy. The results showed that the proposed system had high usability, especially for users with high computational efficacy and environment expertise. The system could thus help to improve the communication between the public and experts during public hearings and enhance the environmental literacy of the public.

RESUMO

Recognizing modern society's multiple risks, this study examines single-use plastic water bottles at the intersection of environmental degradation and societal carelessness for the elderly. While prioritising economic profits and plastic waste, we have neglected bottles' typical poor openability for older people. Thus, we evaluated the openability of bottles with environmentally friendly and socially inclusive designs in South Korea by comparing older and younger adults' experiences. Integrating different attributes than existing studies that analyse opening torque or one-handed opening, the test results show that older adults experience the poorest two-handed openability when bottles have both a weight thickness lower than 14.42 g and an easily squeezable bottle structure. In South Korea, companies advocate eco-friendliness by valuing lighter weight with less plastic and support user-friendliness by adopting easily squeezed sidewall patterns, while the industry maintains broad opening torque regulations; however, we show this combination exceeds older users' capabilities. That is, for openability, bottles need to keep a weight thickness greater than 12 g, abandon easily squeezed sidewall patterns or reduce the opening torque regulation range to 100 N-cm. These socially favourable but ecologically adverse measures will be sustainable when the efficient linear economy transitions to an effective circular economy.

RESUMO

Expressways in Korea are high-speed traffic roads connecting important cities. Road infrastructure continues to expand to accommodate the increase in traffic volume associated with the growth of industry and tourism. Here, data on 36,863 roadkill events that occurred on expressway routes managed by the Korea Expressway Corporation between 2004 and 2019 were analyzed. Characterizing patterns of roadkill is important for prioritizing roadkill mitigation measures. We identified consistently increasing or decreasing trends using Mann-Kendall statistics and Sen's slope. Roadkill was most common in Gangwon Province and was concentrated between May and June and between October and December. Water deer (Hydropotes inermis) was the most common road-killed species. The trend analysis revealed a statistically significant decline in Gangwon Province and a statistically significant increase in the Capital Area and Chungnam Province. There was a significant increase in wild boar (Sus scrofa) roadkill in the first and fourth quarters. Mitigation measures are needed for regions and species showing increasing trends, including water deer in the first to third quarters, periods for which no decline in water deer roadkill was noted.

RESUMO

The response of the phenological events of individual species to climate change is not isolated, but is connected through interaction with other species at the same or adjacent trophic level. Using long-term phenological data observed since 1976 in Korea, whose temperature has risen more steeply than the average global temperature, this study conducted phenological analysis (differ-ences in the phenology of groups, differences in phenological shifts due to climate change, differ-ences in phenological sensitivity to climate by groups, and the change of phenological day differ-ences among interacting groups). The phenological shift of the producer group (plants) was found to be negative in all researched species, which means that it blooms quickly over the years. The regression slope of consumers (primary consumers and secondary consumers) was generally posi-tive which means that the phenological events of these species tended to be later during the study period. The inter-regional deviation of phenological events was not large for any plant except for plum tree and Black locust. In addition, regional variations in high trophic levels of secondary consumers tended to be greater than that of producers and primary consumers. Among the studied species, plum was the most sensitive to temperature, and when the temperature rose by 1 °C, the flowering time of plum decreased by 7.20 days. As a result of checking the day differences in the phenological events of the interacting species, the phenological events of species were reversed, and butterflies have appeared earlier than plum, Korean forsythia, and Korean rosebay since 1990. Using long-term data from Korea, this study investigated differences in phenological reactions among trophic groups. There is a possibility of a phenological mismatch between trophic groups in the future if global warming continues due to differences in sensitivity to climate and phenological shifts between trophic levels.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) causes discomfort in daily life, including lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs) caused by the enlarged prostate, and requires long-term management as a chronic, irreversible disease. To improve LUTS, certain complementary therapies have been used with or without doctors' directions. Conventional treatments and complementary therapies tend to be combined unsystematically, depending on patient preference; thus, research for safe and efficient combination therapy is warranted. METHODS: Twenty-nine participants were randomly assigned to an integrative group (IG, n = 15) or a conventional group (CG, n = 14). The IG received moxibustion (twice weekly for 4 weeks, at the acupuncture points SP6, LR3, and CV4) and conventional medication for 4 weeks, followed by conventional medication alone for 8 weeks. The CG received conventional medication alone for 12 weeks. The outcome measures were International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), patient's global impression of changes (PGIC), maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax), postvoid residual urine volume (PVR), and frequency-volume chart. RESULTS: Total IPSS (IG, -2.4 ±â€Š4.2; CG, 0.9 ±â€Š4.0; P = .039), PGIC-A (IG, 3.5 ±â€Š1.0; CG, 2.2 ±â€Š1.0; P = .001), and PGIC-B (IG, 3.5 ±â€Š0.1; CG, 4.7 ±â€Š0.6; P = .004) were significantly improved in the IG compared with the CG, 4 weeks after baseline. Among the IPSS items, incomplete emptying (IG, -0.6 ±â€Š0.7; CG, 0.4 ±â€Š1.2; P = .019), straining (IG, -0.6 ±â€Š0.8; CG, 0.2 ±â€Š1.2; P = .046), and nocturia (IG, -0.8 ±â€Š1.4; CG, 0.1 ±â€Š1.0; P = .045) showed significant differences. The Qmax and PVR volume did not differ significantly at 12 weeks after the baseline. CONCLUSION: Moxibustion can be considered an adjunct therapy to improve LUTS in BPE patients. A full-sized randomized controlled trial would be feasible with comparator modifications and an extended study period. The study design should include a placebo group and narrow the eligibility to subjects who do not respond well to conventional treatments.

RESUMO

In contrast to other fields, environmental protection (e.g., habitat protection) often fails to include quantitative evaluation as part of the existing environmental impact assessment (EIA) process, and therefore the EIA is often a poor forecasting tool, which makes selecting a reasonable plan of action difficult. In this study, we used the Habitat Evaluation Procedure (HEP) to quantify the long-term effects of a road construction project on an ecosystem. The water deer (Hydropotes inermis) was selected as the species of study since it uses an optimum habitat; water deer habitat data were collected on vegetation cover, stream water density, geographic contour, land use class, and road networks. The Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) and Cumulative Habitat Unit (CHU) values for the water deer were estimated to investigate the major land cover classes, the national river systems, and vegetation cover. Results showed that the environmental impact in the road construction project area would result in a net ecological loss value of 1211 without installation of an eco-corridor, which reduced to 662 with an eco-corridor, providing a 55% increase in the net value after 50 years of the mitigation plan. Comparing the 13 proposed ecological mitigation corridors, the corridor that would result in the highest net increase (with an increase of 69.5), was corridor #4, which was regarded as the most appropriate corridor to properly connect water deer habitat. In sum, the study derived the net increase in quantitative values corresponding with different mitigation methods over time for a road construction project; this procedure can be effectively utilized in the future to select the location of ecological corridors while considering the costs of constructing them.

RESUMO

Numerous studies have addressed antipredatory benefits of mixed-species flocks of foragers, but studies on individual's vigilance as a function of group size are limited. In the Cheolwon area of the Korean Demilitarized Zone, vigilance of the subordinate White-naped cranes (Grus vipio) in 11 groups composed of conspecifics and the dominant Red-crowned cranes (Grus japonensis) was examined. Vigilance correlated negatively with group size due to negative correlation with the number of conspecifics, but not the dominant heterospecifics. This is consistent with the hypothesis that a decrease in vigilance in larger groups is due to antipredatory benefits from increased predator detection in larger groups (associated with the presence of a larger number of conspecifics). This suggested that the mechanism leads to canceling out of the otherwise expected antipredatory benefits to the subordinate species from the increased predator detection by larger group size (associated with larger number of dominants). This is one of only a few behavioral studies of these endangered crane species in the relatively inaccessible wintering area of international importance in the areas of high conservation value.

RESUMO

The NanoAptamer assay is a bisphenol A (BPA) quantification method that uses magnetic beads, quantum dot nanoparticles, and a BPA-specific aptamer. In this study, screening of various consumer and household products for BPA was demonstrated utilizing the NanoAptamer assay. First, the experimental conditions suitable for BPA detection using the NanoAptamer assay were examined in terms of incubation time, temperature, and buffer composition. The range of BPA quantification via the NanoAptamer assay was determined to be 0.005-1000 ng/mL of BPA. The selectivity was confirmed by detecting BPA in an analog mixture containing bisphenol S and bisphenol F. Finally, a leaching experiment using 20 consumer and household products classified into 4 categories was performed to demonstrate the capability of the NanoAptamer assay for BPA detection. The experiment was validated by high-performance liquid chromatography analysis (correlation coefficient, r = 0.99).

RESUMO

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a glycoprotein that is secreted by prostate gland epithelial cells, and elevation of PSA level in serum is often observed with prostate cancer or prostate disorders. Therefore, detection of PSA level in patient specimens is used as a diagnostic marker when screening of prostate cancer. In this study, we developed PSA antibody-conjugated microsphere beads that can be used for quantitation of PSA. We optimized the procedure for bead preparation and validated the detection analysis by using LNCaP and DU-145 prostate cancer cell lysates. By applying the procedure, extracellular PSA from culture media of LNCaP cells and standard PSA proteins were quantified to assess whether the antibody-conjugated microsphere bead can be used to detect trace amounts of PSA. The PSA level results obtained by using the antibody-conjugated microsphere beads indicate that the procedure is sensitive and quantitative in analyzing PSA. Taken together, the results suggest that the method is suitable for microquantitation of PSA from patient specimens.

RESUMO

For the sensitive quantification of bisphenol A (BPA), we have developed NanoAptamer assay, which employs aptamer and complementary signaling DNA, a set of quantum dots (QD), and magnetic beads (MBs). Signaling DNA-QD655 was tethered to MB-QD565 via the aptamer. The affinity of the aptamer to BPA resulted in the release of the signaling DNA-QD655 from the complex and hence the corresponding decrease in the QD655 fluorescence measurement signal. Three new aptamers (23, 58, and 24-mer) were designed via truncation of the reference aptamer (73-mer). The sensitivity and selectivity of each aptamer for BPA detection via NanoAptamer assay were investigated. One of the truncated aptamers (24-mer) has shown a significantly better performance (limit of detection, LOD, 0.17 pg/mL) than the reference 73-mer aptamer (LOD, 570 pg/mL). It has also shown the best selectivity for BPA detection over BPA analogues (i.e., bisphenol B, bisphenol C, and diethylstilbestrol). It corresponded to a normalized fluorescence change of 33.7% at the environmentally relevant concentration of 1 ng/mL (1 ppb) BPA; however, the analogues remained unchanged (2.3-3.9%).

RESUMO

All-solid-state lithium batteries offer notable advantages over conventional Li-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes in terms of energy density, stability, and safety. To realize this technology, it is critical to develop highly reliable solid-state inorganic electrolytes with high ionic conductivities and adequate processability. Li1+x Alx Ti2-x (PO4 )3 (LATP) with a NASICON (Na superionic conductor)-like structure is regarded as a potential solid electrolyte, owing to its high "bulk" conductivity (ca. 10-3  S cm-1 ) and excellent stability against air and moisture. However, the solid LATP electrolyte still suffers from a low "total" conductivity, mainly owing to the blocking effect of grain boundaries to Li+ conduction. In this study, an LATP-Bi2 O3 composite solid electrolyte shows very high total conductivity (9.4×10-4  S cm-1 ) at room temperature. Bi2 O3 acts as a microstructural modifier to effectively reduce the fabrication temperature of the electrolyte and to enhance its ionic conductivity. Bi2 O3 promotes the densification of the LATP electrolyte, thereby improving its structural integrity, and at the same time, it facilitates Li+ conduction, leading to reduced grain-boundary resistance. The feasibility of the LATP-Bi2 O3 composite electrolyte in all-solid-state Li batteries is also examined in this study.

RESUMO

Sigumjang prepared from fermented barley bran is a traditional fermented food found only in the Gyeongsang-do area of South Korea. There have been no studies reported to date despite the potential bioactivities of sigumjang. In this study, the anti-obesity activities of sigumjang extracts (SEs) during 3T3-L1 differentiation into adipocytes were investigated. SEs inhibited adipocyte differentiation by suppressing the CCAAT/enhancer binding protein-ß and sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c expression in the early stage of differentiation, followed by the suppression of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ, CCAAT/enhancer binding protein-α, and adiponectin. These changes in adipogenic markers induced inhibition of lipogenesis via down-regulation of mainly fatty acid synthase, acetyl-CoA carboxylase, fatty acid binding protein 4, and perilipin. These results were more significant in the extract of sigumjang fermented with isolated Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MFST compared to naturally fermented sigumjang group. SEs can be considered as a useful material for developing food with health benefits and anti-obesity properties.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to explore the feasibility of using moxibustion as a supplementary intervention and to assess the sample size for verifying the effectiveness and safety of integrative treatment involving moxibustion compared with conventional treatment for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia accompanying moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A total of 60 patients diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia by a urologist based on prostate size, prostate-specific antigen and clinical symptoms will participate of their own free will; urologists will monitor the patients and evaluate their symptoms. The patients will be randomised to either a conventional group or an integrative group with a 1:1 allocation according to computer-generated random numbers concealed in opaque, sealed, sequentially numbered envelopes. Watchful waiting or oral medication including α blocker, 5α-reductase inhibitors or antimuscarinic drugs will be offered as conventional treatment. Integrative treatment will include moxibustion therapy in addition to the conventional treatment. The moxibustion therapy will be conducted twice a week for 4 weeks on the bilateral acupoints SP6, LR3 and CV4 by a qualified Korean medical doctor. The primary outcome will be the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) after eight sessions. The secondary outcomes will be the post-void residual urine volume, the maximum urinary flow rate, IPSS, the results of a Short-Form 36-Question Health Survey after 12 weeks, and the patients' global impression of changes at each visit. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Written informed consent will be obtained from all participants. This study was approved by the institutional review boards of both Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital and Pusan National University Korean Medicine Hospital. The trial results will be disseminated through open-access journals and conferences. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT02051036.

RESUMO

Kinetic and enzymatic inhibition experiments were performed to investigate the effects of methanethiol (MT) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on methane oxidation by a methane-oxidizing consortium. In the coexistence of MT and H2S, the oxidation of methane was delayed until MT and H2S were completely degraded. MT and H2S could be degraded, both with and without methane. The kinetic analysis revealed that the methane-oxidizing consortium showed a maximum methane oxidation rate (Vmax) of 3.7 mmol g-dry cell weight (DCW)(-1) h(-1) and a saturation constant (Km) of 184.1 µM. MT and H2S show competitive inhibition on methane oxidation, with inhibition values (Ki) of 1504.8 and 359.8 µM, respectively. MT was primary removed by particulate methane monooxygenases (pMMO) of the consortium, while H2S was degraded by the other microorganisms or enzymes in the consortium. DNA and mRNA transcript levels of the pmoA gene expressions were decreased to ∼10(6) and 10(3)pmoA gene copy number g-DCW(-1) after MT and H2S degradation, respectively; however, both the amount of the DNA and mRNA transcript recovered their initial levels of ∼10(7) and 10(5)pmoA gene copy number g-DCW(-1) after methane oxidation, respectively. The gene expression results indicate that the pmoA gene could be rapidly reproducible after methane oxidation. This study provides comprehensive information of kinetic interactions between methane and sulfur compounds.
